My Kind of April Fool's Joke

I was looking for something fun to celebrate April Fool's Day. I'm not big on jokes unless everyone has fun with them, so I was looking for something to do with my kids that was fit that criteria.
I saw some great cupcakes featured online that I knew I had to try.
Since April Fools Day fell on a Friday they were perfect to bring for a fun dessert for the kids at my parent's Friday night dinner.
My girls were super excited to try it out!
They were ultra easy to decorate thanks to the clever use of candies. They were so easy that at least 1/2 the decorating could be done by my little girls (ages 4 and 6) with minimal direction from me, a huge bonus since my girls really wanted it to be "their" joke.

These would be fun anytime!

So without further ado, here are our creations~

"Spaghetti and Meatballs"

Piped butter cream icing(we used a plastic bag with the corner snipped) a bit of thinned strawberry jam for the sauce and a Ferraro Roche for the meatball

"Mashed potatoes with gravy and butter "
White icing, make a small depression in the center. Drizzle on some caramel sauce and top with a squished yellow Starburst

"Popcorn" and "Peas and Carrots"
These two were definitely the favorites! The popcorn was made by snipping mini marshmallows into 3 slices with kitchen scissors, then you arrange them sort of like petals and top with a whole slightly smooshed marshmallow dipped in a bit of icing to serve as glue. ice the cupcakes in white icing and top with the "popcorn"
The peas and carrots are surprisingly convincing! The kids kept asking if we put real vegetables on them! My only problem was coming up with enough green Runts to use as "peas". I might look for other options when I do it next time since I really don't relish buying 6 boxes of  Runts to make a dozen cupcakes (I managed 3 with one box, but ideally I would have made 2 and covered them more). The carrots are just orange Starburst cut into quarters. As my aunt said, the carrots are so convincing they make the peas look even more real! The cupcakes were iced with green icing before placing the "veggies" on top.

They were loved by kids and grown-ups alike!
